ftg = for the gamers
I was just playing comix zone again on sonic’s ultimate genesis collection on ps3 I feel that comix zone is pretty much the best game on sega genesis I want to give a few reasons why I think this Ok first off let me give my background with the game.. I remember I got the game back in 95.. I remember seeing the commercials and it looked phenomenal I got it and I remember it really being the first time it seemed like a game lived up to the hype I remember feeling like it really delivered Here are some things I’d like to point out about the game Graphics are amazing.. the graphics on comix zone are absolutely top notch.. its insane that they made this game on hardware that was released in 1989.. the graphics on comix zone are 100% incredible the animation is unbelievable.. what I mean is, there is a ton of it, and not only for the main character but also for the enemies.. this was the one beat em’ up where it felt like it played as good as a fighting game in large part due to having so many animations and moves.. he can do some moves that u may do once or maybe never in the game, depending how you play Backgrounds are also amazing, colors are vibrant.. some segments have snow/rain, etc There are a lot of interesting elements in the gameplay.. sometimes I wonder if people today know about some of the things that aren’t really explained outside of a manual.. for example The mouse can scare women in the game The mouse can scrape the paper and find items and also flip switches Pressing and holding all action buttons will allow sketch to throw a paper plane that will pretty much clear the screen This game has different paths so it encourages learning which paths work for you and it helps the game to have more replay value The game has two endings There is a good deal of strategy to the game, considering which items to use and when Sometimes in the game there is an easy way to do what at first glance looks like a difficult thing These types of elements cannot be understated.. when people think sega genesis, oftentimes they think sonic.. sonic is largely just a run and jump game.. comix zone is a very dynamic game.. one moment you may be fighting, the next moment there may be something to figure out, or something to blow up, or something to run from (like when mortus sets the pages on fire) Another thing about this game is it is very stylish and creative In my opinion, comix zone is one of the first very stylish games.. it just had a cool factor that nothing else had.. absolutely NO OTHER GAME had the cool factor of comix zone in the 90s man.. the game was like a dream come true.. u play as a comic book artist who can fight.. his name is even fly.. “sketch turner” ..everything about this game was just crack in the 90s.. there was no stone left unturned The creativity on this game is off the charts.. u are transported into your own comic book and you have to fight your way out.. and the screens are different sections of the comic book.. and when u beat a level the page turns.. and sketch is constantly talking in talk bubbles just like he would in a comic book.. he even gets a superhero power up where he like punches the ground and the pages rip.. toward the end the comic isn’t fully finished so it goes from color to black and white.. and sometimes a hand comes up on screen to draw enemies on the fly as you go along.. I mean this game is literally off the charts in creativity.. there is so much attention to detail and a ton of care went into the whole comic book motif I’d also like to point out something about this game that I’m not sure modern gamers understand.. they might understand, they might not.. but that is the fact that it was made for the 6-button sega genesis controller Today when you play comix zone on a compilation or on an emulator, chances are you’re playing it on a playstation controller or an xbox controller.. in my opinion the game makes a lot more sense on a 6-button controller On the 6-button, the top buttons coincide with your items.. the bottom buttons are “actions” ..block, fight, and jump I imagine modern people who play comix zone may possibly miss the ease of use of the game when playing on a 4-button controller.. it is just weird and obtuse when you start adding in shoulder buttons and things I think modern people who review the game have to take the 6-button into consideration.. I’m currently playing the game and I’m playing it on an arcade stick.. I had to change the controls around but I got it laid out the way it was on genesis I love the characters in the game.. sketch turner is an amazing character, also his rat is endearing.. the support chick is cool (this is back before every female in a game was a feminist) .. I also love how the game has sketch fighting against human fighters as well as sci-fi type creatures the sound effects are utterly phenomenal.. i can actually prove this objectively.. everyone is always saying how great streets of rage was.. ok compare the streets of rage sound effects to the comix zone sound effects.. no comparison.. comix zone spreads its two cheeks and launches a massive dump all over streets of rage the voiceovers in comix zone alone deserve some kind of award.. they don’t sound muffled like many old school games with voiceovers.. instead they sound crisp and clear the music in the game is also great.. very fitting to what is happening on screen, and overall it has a rock motif.. if you don’t immediately like the music, I do believe it’s the type that can grow on you more as you continue playing.. but the music is great.. it feels “edgy” one thing i want to point out is i've heard a lot of people say the game is hard.. the game is not hard.. i beat it when i was a kid.. i will admit i got the bad ending- but still.. here is what i want to say about difficulty 1. nearly every game was "hard" when you couldn't save 2. to me, a genuinely hard game was one where you only saw like half the levels.. u never got to see like half the game cuz u could never make it that far 3. this game has strategy.. u learn the routes, u learn when and where to use items, u learn efficiency, u learn the things sketch can do.. if you use your head its not as hard as what modern gamers are saying it is 4. i just don't think this game is any harder than any other 16-bit game like earthworm jim, vectorman, or whatever else... everyone says this game is hard but its not the gameplay is fun.. nothing is slow paced or stiff.. nothing feels repetitive.. everything is madd fun throughout I haven’t played every sega genesis game.. but i say comix zone is the best sega genesis game because it is such a great achievement in every way- its hard for me to imagine a game beating it The only downside to comix zone is its only one player.. that is literally the only thing someone could say about this game.. I just feel that they put a ton of effort into the game and made an absolute masterpiece.. I feel that its totally in a league of its own I don’t want a sequel either because I don’t think they could make something that good again Just like the last of us.. it was pretty much perfect, then the last of us 2 came out and it was complete toilet water.. Anyway.. hopefully I didn’t forget anything Comix zone is one of my top favorite games ever made And if u like it, I would also highly recommend three dirty dwarves on sega Saturn.. its another 2d beat em up classic
