i finally got a chance to peep the new kendrick lamar album 'to pimp a butterfly'
i feel very strongly about this next statement.. "COMPLEXION" SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SINGLE.. complexion is phenomenal and i think it would have gotten a lot of black women on board both for the sound and the discussion (sidenote on complexion: i must say the girl at the end is NICE.. she sounds like a long lost female tribe called quest member to me.. i would have loved to have complexion as a single so she could get shine and people can see there are female rappers who are thoughtful and soulful.. all female rappers don't have to be nicki minaj or "ill na na" or whatever) the other song i feel should be a single is "you ain't gotta lie" kendrick's album is PHENOMENAL i don't think he said anything on this that bothered me i think "i love myself" is kinda stupid and 'oprah-ish' in a sense.. like something you'd hear a fat middle aged woman say.. u know.. like a corny pseudo-enlightenment sort of thing.. however it makes more sense in the context of the themes discussed on the album it makes even more sense after the "loving you is complicated" track.. because you realize the sentiment is not one-sided.. he is dealing with both hating yourself and your decisions and dealing with your outside criticisms, and then he deals with loving/appreciating yourself for who you are i don't really buy albums but i might actually buy this one because it is really good.. this album is just not a joke at all.. its like one big play where one person plays every part (and very well i might add) i've heard some people say kendrick is a weird lyricist and i agree.. his thing is more execution than just lyricism.. he is more unpredictable.. he is like unorthodox.. like he may not always rhyme multiple syllables or puns or metaphors or hyperbole, but you get a sense that its not because he can't.. you feel like he is sort of seeing past all that to a bigger picture that picture in this particular album being the underlying message to black people.. it's basically like his empathy SLASH love letter SLASH blueprint for success in a fallen world i say slash because you get the sense that they are one in the same.. as if he thought.. "how can i express my love and concern for the black community in america?" and the answer was: "to tell them some things i think they can use" i highly recommend this album but you MUST (the first time, and at least a few times after) listen to it front to back... you can't skip around like most albums you can really see why some people are saying this is a classic.. because it really stands on its own.. there are no real trendy things in the record, its more like taking a look inside kendrick's mind.. you can tell each aspect of the record was under his personal scrutiny a phenomenal piece of work *turns on complexion*
