i was looking through some old stuff and found an old essay i wrote for an online class i took
read on if u wish or skip it.. but i'll give u the background: we had to watch some videos about assisted suicide.. people were tired of their lives and so they were planning out their deaths and killing themselves in these documentaries i gave my thoughts on them in this essay peep if u wish.. like i said i just ran across this old essay tonight and thought why not share it.. its basically my thoughts on suicide Sociology of Aging 10-16-2011 Discussion Board 7A My opinion is that no one should end their life purposefully. I understand that there are circumstances where a person would want to end their own life however morally I feel that the best thing to do is try to withstand whatever it is you find yourself going through. I do definitely feel for people who are suffering, but killing yourself is not something I could really ever condone. The movie “The Suicide Tourist” did not change my opinion on suicide or “assisted death” at all. As a person with Christian beliefs, I think he should have just stuck it out and tried to find meaning in his life as opposed to just ending it. I think of life like someone allowing me to borrow their car- I get to enjoy it for a limited period then at some point I have to give it back and give an account for the condition the car is in. Is the car(life) beat-up and taken for granted? Or was it used wisely and taken care of? I feel that killing yourself is like destroying that thing you have to give an account for. Killing yourself is like saying: “The transmission went bad so I put a few sticks of dynamite in the gas tank.” I think it is best to value your life even in suffering. I agree with him that his life was terrible and that he was probably a bit of a burden to people around him at times, but there really isn’t any way I would ever condone killing yourself. The circumstances really are not much of a factor to me; I would never really consider suicide as the solution to a person’s problems. I would say that seeing the movies did strengthen my opinion that suicide is negative because it made me think about how temporary life is. Everyone is on earth for a limited period of time already, so I say take your licks and keep it moving because you’ll be off the ride soon regardless. Instead of speeding the process, just deal with your stressors and find meaning in your suffering. Maybe someone sees your suffering and is inspired by your strength and you may change their life for the better. You don’t, and can’t ever know everything so instead of trying to “logically” kill yourself, just stay alive and trust that the meaning of your pain will one day be revealed, and try to have hope that it is not in vain. The guy who killed himself was an atheist and I don’t agree with their opinions about anything and this man was no different. On one hand he felt that death was simply ‘ceasing to exist’ but on the other hand he wondered aloud what could ‘be on the other side’ so to me he was confused. If a person asked me about death I would give a definitive answer about the existence of an afterlife, one being in heaven and one being in hell. I am not confused or ‘on the fence’ the way the man was in the video. He headed face-first into death with two simultaneous beliefs, “maybe something is there, maybe not.” Its like he said: “There could be a car coming or not, but either way I’m still going to cross this street without looking.” To choose to die in a state of such uncertainty doesn’t sound wise to me. btw... for anyone who may wonder why i talk about suicide on songs, its because i want people to know that someone understands them.. i try to talk about it in a way to where i'm not holding your hand and saying "don't worry it'll be ok" because that can sound patronizing........ instead, i rap about it to reach people more like a sibling who says "i feel u and that's f*cked up what ur going through but i got your back" my approach may not seem like that, but it is.. i'm just primarily offering understanding
