i wanna talk about why i don't go to school for music i went to belmont and school of audio engineering in the past belmont is touted as the premier school of music buisness school of audio engineering (sae) is self explanatory at belmont i tried to start a hip hop club because everyone seemed to be country and gospel oriented.. no one wanted to sign my petition everyone was closed minded "don't rappers use curse words?" stuff like that.. people not understanding that music is what u make it, not just what u've seen people do with it as for the actual music business classes.. i learned a few things but one thing i also learned is that the music business is a business.. meaning if u are an artist, u need a basic knowledge but the rest has to be left up to experts.. if u sat around doing business all day u wouldn't be able to do music would u? so u need a lawyer, u need a manager, a booking agent, etc. etc. thus.. the school of music business is more geared towards people with those aspirations if u wanted to be an artist like me.. everything was very boring and lame.. "i'm at a music school.. so why is school so wack?" no, ur at a music BUSINESS school, beyond that.. everything they teach changes very quickly, so anything beyond a basic knowledge FOR AN ARTIST, is too much info for example, when i studied at belmont they taught us about the big 5.. 5 major record companies and their subsidiaries and royalties and ish now there's only 3 and mtv doesn't play videos anymore and mp3s sell more than cds now and all cd stores are pretty much closed because u can get music for free etc etc meaning the whole landscape changed so quickly that damn near everything i learned was worthless, a few basic principles may remain, but today.. today u can do what u want.. the labels don't have ur nuts in their hand anymore.. draw up your own contracts and live by them.. why not? the rules have been tossed out the window as for sae this school was even worse they taught us things that were irrelevant to today's music creation landscape for example, i know how to use a tape machine.. but who gives a f*ck? would it make any sense for me to BUY a tape machine today? or better yet, buy that expensive tape? its so archaic to sit there editing with tape and a razor blade.. but this sort of ish is what i was graded on also.. no joke they gave u assignments to "develop your ear" they would make u spend hours at a time in a room with headphones on listening to white noise do u fcking know what white noise is? it is the sound when ur tv does this GREAT
re-read wtf i just said.. u would have to log HOURS listening to f*cking white noise i shouldn't have to say anything else after that but basically i will say sae was bullshit for someone who wants a basic knowledge of how to make music.. my teacher was a tech-y guy who loved 70s music.. no joke one day i raised my hand and asked him how he knew so much stuff because he for some reason explained how a f*cking toaster worked to the whole class he explained how he knew it, then he said thanks because he took my question as a compliment, a testament to his vast array of stupid-ass knowledge what i mean is, if ur not one of those guys then that shit is not for u what music schools do is they prepackage bullshit and sell it to u in the form of "THE ROAD TO YOUR DREAMS" what i have learned is, u just go out and work and make your dreams come to fruition through planning and long term and short term goal setting why do i say this? ok u can go to SAE (school of audio engineering) and pay some asshole $9,000 to make u memorize 10 pages of microphones, or the fcking sound frequency of a tremolo (NOT EVEN KIDDING) or make u listen to white noise like u have nothing better to do with your saturday OR u can take half that money- get on the internet, figure out what u need to buy, buy it, then start making your album there is no right way to get to your dreams these schools want u to think their way is the way to success, but they just limit u, make u feel like everything u do is wrong, make u feel like if ur not doin it like this or that that ur not relevant the way to success is prayer, planning, goal setting, and accomplishment so for me music is MY thing, i refuse to allow anyone to tell me anything about it i would rather go to school and work and do things completely out of the realm of music, than be in music and have my beloved hobby raped and devalued and deemed worthless by some idiot in a suit who has no understanding of what i'm attempting to do in the first place
